Soccer Club in Seattle invitesPKS (Pilkarski Klub of Seattle) is an all-Polish soccer team, currently playing in Seattle's premier recreational league, GSSL ( www.gssl.org). The team looks for new players aged 17-40, with good skills for the summer season, which begins June 5th. Games are every Sunday, and most of players practice at least once a week in the Seattle area. Playing for PKS is an excellent opportunity to meet new Polish friends, show your Polish pride on the soccer pitch, and play good football with a group that is serious about making a strong Polish soccer team in Seattle. Prof. Venclova also teaches at the Polish Studies at Yale and extensively publishes on Polish topics. He shared with Czeslaw Milosz respect for multicultural heritage of Vilnius and Lithuania and together they were building bridges between Polish and Lithuanian cultures and nations. Pope John Paul II miniseries on CBS, Dec 4 & 7 CBS miniseries about the Polish Pope, directed by John K. Harrison, features Jon Voight playing the pontiff and Cary Elwes as a young Karol Wojtyla. The first part covers the life of Karol Wojtyla in Poland, the second his life as the Pope. Movie was shot in Poland and in Vatican, where the filmmakers enjoyed unprecedented access. Jon Voight who won an Oscar for his Vietnam vet role in Coming Home (1979) has been praised for his depiction of Pope’s warmth and charisma. 9, 5 pm Polish Home Association invites to a celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Solidarity movement. On August 31, 1980, a general strike led by Lech Walesa won the right to independent trade unions; that event started the collapse of communism in Europe. The program recognizes importance of Solidarity for democracy in Europe and honors Solidarity leaders living in the Seattle area; distinguished guest include Polish Consul P. Kapuscinska, UW Prof. H. Ellison, Seattle City Councilmember Jean Godden and WA State Labor Councilmember Rick Bender. Urgent by June 28: Host families needed for high school students on exchange A local rep for a non-profit called EdVentures is looking for host families for 2 Polish teenagers: Malgorzata, who is 17 and from Wroclaw, and Michal, also 17, from Koszalin. Host families have to speak English at home. The students will be insured and have their own pocket money. They will be arriving to attend 11th grade just before the school starts in September and would stay for the whole school year, but the host families are needed now. A host family for Malgorzata is needed by Tuesday, June 28.

Polish Home, Jun 26, 7 pm Salon Poezji (the Salon of Poetry in Seattle) is a new organization devoted to the art of word and its masters, the poets. The opening evening Niezniszczalne oblicza milosci (Undestructible Faces of Love) will feature sonnets by Francesco Petrarca in Polish translation by Jalu Kurek and poems by Ewa Lipska, a contemporary Polish poet living in Cracow. Music by Franz Liszt and Ludwig van Beethoven interpreted by the accomplished Russian pianist Jaan Dementiev will accompany the recitations. The Salon has been founded by Lena Wrozynski of Seattle. Seattle Polish Film Festival at SAM, Apr 23 – May 1 Polish Film Festival moved from the familiar early November slot to April and back to the Seattle Art Museum with hope of returning to the old glory. SPFF actually does look great this year! The films include the 2005 Oscar contender Welts (Pregi) and the renown Symmetry (Symetria) as well as another 2005 Oscar contender, a short The Fallen Art by Oscar nominated Tomek Baginski. The Festival has never had so many guests! The Opening Night Gala will be attended by directors Magdalena Piekorz, Artur Wiecek and Witold Beres as well as actors Krzysztof Globisz and Grzegorz Hajdarowicz, while the second weekend will bring directors Janusz Zaorski and Lech Majewski. The 13th SPFF edition opens on April 23, 2005, with a screening of Angel in Love (Zakochany Aniol), directed by Artur Wiecek whose Angel in Cracow was such a big hit at the 2002 SPFF. Kontynuując uniwersytecką serię, Komitet Funduszu Studiów Polskich przedstawi dwóch wybitnych poetów: Adama Zagajewskiego i Edwarda Hirscha. Adam Zagajewski, związany w latach 70 z polska opozycją, w roku 1980 wyjechał z kraju i przez ponad 20 lat mieszkał w Paryżu. Od roku 1988 każdą wiosnę spędza w Teksasie, prowdząc kursy creative writing na University of Houston. W roku 2002 powrócił do Krakowa. Ostatnio został uhonorowany prestiżową 2004 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Obok książek opublikowanych w Polsce, jest autorem wydanych w Stanach czterech zbiorów esejów (Solidarity, Solitude; Two Cities; Another Beauty; A Defense of Ardor) i tyluż tomów poezji (Tremor; Canvas; Mysticism for Beginners; Without End). Edward Hirsch, poeta i krytyk amerykański, ma szczególne zasługi dla popularyzacji poezji, w tym także polskiej. Po latach nauczania na uniwersytetach, objął ostatnio funkcję prezesa John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fundation. Wielokrotnie nagradzany, wydał sześć tomów poezji oraz trzy prace krytycznoliterackie, z których prawdziwym bestsellerem stała się opublikowana w roku 1999 książka How to Read a Poem (and Fall in Love with Poetry). Dwaj znakomici poeci mieli już niejednokrotnie okazję do wspólnych wystąpień. Wspólpracowali ze sobą w Houston, prezentowali poezje w Nowym Yorku, najważniejszego dokonali jednak w Polsce: od roku 2002 rokrocznie organizują Krakowskie Seminarium Poetyckie (Kraków Poetry Seminar). Zapraszają do Krakowa amerykańskich poetów, a także studentów, by dyskutować o twórczości własnej i cudzej, polskiej i amerykańskiej. Poezja zatacza krąg, budując most między dwiema - można by sądzić - nieprzystawalnymi kulturami. Tematem majowego wystąpienia Adama Zagajewskiego i Edwarda Hirscha będzie twórczość Czesława Miłosza. W rozpisanym na dwa głosy wykładzie "Czesław Miłosz a przyszłość poezji", skupionym na dziele i wpływie poety-Noblisty, znajdzie się także miejsce na ogólne rozważania o roli poezji, jak i wątek najzupełniej osobisty. Zarówno wstęp, jak i udział w późniejszym przyjęciu jest wolny. Także 1 maja o godz. 12 dbędzie się dobroczynny lunch z udziałem Adama Zagajewskiego i Edwarda Hirscha. Wstęp $40. "Czeslaw Milosz and the Future of Poetry"
On Sunday, May 1st, 7:00 p.m. at the UW Kane Hall, the Polish Studies Endowment Fund Committee will present two outstanding poets: Edward Hirsch and Adam Zagajewski. A professor of creative writing at the University of Houston, Adam Zagajewski is a leading Polish poet and a recipient of the 2004 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Edward Hirsch, an acclaimed American poet, is the current president of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. For the past three years these two brilliant poets have invited American poets to Poland to attend the Kraków Poetry Seminar, creating a very special bridge between the two cultures. As guests of the Polish Studies Distinguished Lecturers Series, they will talk about the poetry of Nobel Prize winner Czesław Miłosz who passed away in 2004. Their conversation, entitled "Czesław Miłosz and the Future of Poetry", will cover many interesting topics including the significance of poetry, Miłosz's influence, and the two poets' own artistic journeys. The lecture will be followed by a wine and cheese reception. Free admission. The same day, May 1st, 2005, at 12:00-2:00 PM, a fundraising luncheon with Adam Zagajewski and Edward Hirsch will be hosted at the private residence. The event hosted by Seattle Mayor Greg Nichols celebrates the sister city program and its volunteers. This year reception features Gdynia (Poland) as well as Nantes (France), Taejon (South Korea) and Tashkent (Uzbekistan), with ethnic food, exhibits and performances prepared by respective local communities; among the performers there is the Polish Choir Vivat Musica.
