 Opening Gala for the new wing of the Polish Home

The Polish Home sports a new wing with additional rooms and an elevator. The Opening Gala starts at 7 pm with the Polish Consul General from Los Angeles, Hon. Joanna Kozinska-Frybes and guests from the City of Seattle attending. The Polish Home Assn invites all the supporters of the extension project as well as members and friends of the Polish Home to celebrate this milestone.

Reception will follow.

Poland's Independence Day Celebration  (11/11/1918)

Poland regained its independence on Nov 11, 1918, when Jozef Pilsudski became the Head of State after a popular revolt liberated the Polish territories.   The program performed by the children from the Polish Scouts troop has been prepared by Iwona Bernacka.

The restaurant "PB Kitchen" will be open.
 

 

49th Annual Fall Bazaar at PHA, Saturday, November 7th and Sunday, November 8th, noon – 7 pm

Yes, this is 49th Annual Fall Polish Bazaar! It is a yearly event organized by the Ladies Auxiliary.

The booths upstairs will offer Polish crystal bowl and vases, Boleslawiec pottery, amber and silver jewelry, pottery, crafts, books and much more.

Downstairs you can enjoy traditional Polish dishes of pierogi, sausage, cabbage rolls etc. served by the young generation of waiters clad in Polish folk costumes. You can also buy home made desserts and pastries. Most of the Puget Sound area Polish organizations would have their booths or info posted. This is usually a quite crowded event, so come early!

We have great news: the Polish Home received an $80,000 grant from the City. However, it is a matching grant and we need to receive new donations before the grant can match them.

Mrs. Maria Urbaniak, nee Puzynowska, an active member of the Polish community in Seattle died on May 5, 2009. She was 98.

Mrs. Urbaniak was born, raised and educated as a lawyer in Vilnius, then the Polish city of Wilno; she graduated in 1939. Arrested by the Soviet authorities shortly after the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939 she was sent to the gulag. Freed by the 1942 "amnesty" she joined Gen. Anders' Army. She married Jozef Urbaniak in Scotland and after the war settled in Seattle, working as a Slavic Librarian at the University of Washington. Mrs. Urbaniak served as an officer of the Polish Home Assn, and was also active member of the Ladies Auxiliary and the Polish Veterans in Seattle. She was decorated with the Siberian Exile Cross, a medal awarded to Polish survivors of the WWII Soviet deportations.

Mrs. Urbaniak is survived by her daughters Anna and Eva.

Mr. Piotr Pawluskiewicz, the current Chairman of the Polish Home Assn Board of Trustees, and former President of the PHA, died on May 7, 2009, after a long illness. He was 59.

Born in Nowy Targ, Poland, Mr. Pawluskiewicz was proud of his Tatra highlander heritage. He came to the United States in 1974 and settled in Seattle in 1978; he has been involved with the Polish Home ever since. Educated as a mechanical engineer in Cracow, Poland, in Seattle he worked for Philips Ultrasound and held several patents. Mr. Pawluskiewicz was one of the pillars of the Polish community in Seattle, serving at many different positions in the Polish Home Assn, including the President and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees. For his activities, he was honored with the Cavalier Cross of the Order of Merit, an order bestowed by the President of Poland for promoting Poland abroad.

Mr. Pawluskiewicz is survived by his wife Wanda Cieslar and children Michasia and Jan, as well as brothers Jan, Ziomek and Michal and their families.

The funeral mass will be held at the St. Joseph church on Monday 5/18/2009 at 11:00 AM St. Margarets Parish on Friday 5/15/09 at 10am then the funeral will be to the Calvary Cemetery 5041 35 Ave NE with a reception at the Polish Hall following. Please attend if you can and remember the family in your thoughts and prayers

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the Polish Home Foundation in lieu of flowers.

May 4, 7:30 PM Movie "Three Buddies" and guests at the Polish Home

The Polish Home invites to a screening of the movie Three Buddies / Trzech kumpli, directed by Ewa Stankiewicz & Anna Ferens, and to a meeting with the co-directors. The movie (2008, 106 min) tells a true story of three dissident buddies, one of them Staszek Pyjas, and their different fates in 1970s Poland and later; it has won several awards including a 2008 Polish Pulitzer.

The movie is in Polish with English subtitles, admission free, donations towards cost of screeing & guests appreciated

Elections Announcement

The PHA Election Committee announces that, in accordance with Election Procedures, all eligible PHA members interested in becoming candidates for PHA elected positions are required to submit, in writing, their candidatures for specific positions to the Election Committee by January 5th, 2009.

Submissions may be sent to: Polish Home Association, 1714 18th Avenue, Seattle, WA 98122, Attn.: Elections, or – preferably – e-mailed to: PHA2009election@polishhome.org.

Please attach your photo and text t be published in the election pamphlet in electronic format.

The Election Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, January 24th, 2009 at 3:00PM.

Proxy forms will be mailed along with election pamphlets to all Members whose signatures are on file with the PHA. Members whose signatures are not yet on file can sign sign the appropriate forms at the Polish Home on January 9th or 16th between the hours of 8:00 and 10:00PM.

This event is the traditional wafer sharing (oplatek) for members and friends of the Polish Home with Fr. Stanislaw Michalek. The Polish Choir Vivat Musica will help with caroling and everybody is invited to come and sing Polish and American carols along.
